Can't we all just be green??

I just had a very unpleasant encounter with my downstairs neighbor, who was so offended at my suggestion the maybe if people started throwing food into the green-bin with it's fancy locking mechanism instead of into the regular garbage in flimsy plastic bag then we would have less of a raccoon/squirrel/trash-all-over-the-backyard problem, that she proceeded to bitch me out for the last 10 minutes.

Her argument: Mark and I use the green bins because WE HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON OUR HANDS and thus are capable of sorting our garbage before we throw it out. She somehow is not phased with the time spent on the near-daily task of picking it up after it's been strewn across the backyard.

Seriously, it's like to her, the green bin doesn't even exist. I just can't understand it. It is a really good system, and it is useful both at home (locking food waste away from animals), and for the environment, as long as it isn't being used to heavy-up the regular garbage trucks. I stood my ground, saying that green-bins do take a little getting used to, but are really not that much more effort. It was really, really tough not to show how friggin irritated I was.

All I know is that with all the effort I put into preventing this kind of thing, I'm not cleaning up that mess.

oh, you idle, hippie youngsters. . . what meaningless task will you set on to next?

seriously though, the green bins are great. i wish he had them in victoria. a raccoon came into our yard 2 nights ago and, after foraging through the compost bin, ate one of the chickens!

death to raccoons, and death to bad neighbours!

mostly what we all need to understand is that people are morons. Not everyone, but a large portion of the general public. And on top of being morons, people are usually pretty selfish and lazy.

So take heart in recalling that you are none of those things and your neighbour most definitely it.

Good for you for keeping your calm. I probably wouldn't have!

Miss you guys!
